About the Program

Interdisciplinary Graduate Training to Eliminate Cancer Disparities (IGniTE-CD)

A training grant in breast cancer disparities research has been established at the University of South Carolina (UofSC) sponsored by Susan G. Komen and led by Drs. Susan Steck and Angela Murphy. The grant will support up to three doctoral students per year over the next three years, beginning in August 2017. Students from the Arnold School of Public Health, UofSC School of Medicine, and UofSC College of Nursing are eligible to apply.

The core objectives are to:

  1. Attract promising doctoral students, particularly those from underrepresented groups affected by health disparities, into research careers focused on breast cancer disparities;
  2. Empower the trainees with the skills and knowledge necessary to flourish as independent investigators; and
  3. Inspire trainees to continue to research throughout their careers the causes of breast cancer disparities and interventions to reduce or eliminate these disparities.
